Have your say: Children’s Online… | Alannah & Madeline Foundation Skip to main content

The privacy regulator (the OAIC) is creating a Children's Online Privacy Code to help protect children's personal information, such as contact details, location, pics, videos and online activity.

Many apps, games, websites and social media services collect, store and share information about children. This can expose children to risks, including contact with strangers, targeted advertising, and manipulative design features which 'nudge' children to spend more time online and give up more private information.

The new Code will put in place rules that online services must follow to protect children’s privacy and give children and their parents more meaningful choices about what happens to children’s personal information.

The privacy regulator has released a draft of the Code and invites students, educators, parents and carers to respond.

We encourage schools to share the parents' guide to the Code and parent consultation materials

The regulator has also created resources for educators including lesson plans, posters, guides and workshop materials. Educators are invited to submit a response on behalf of their classes to help refine and improve the draft Code.

Closing date 5 June.
