Be a buddy with the Tiger Army and ensure no child in emergency care goes without clean PJs and a teddy.
Each day, child protection workers across the country face heart-wrenching cases where children are exposed to unsafe environments and experience neglect or abuse.
In moments like this Buddy Bags from the Alannah & Madeline Foundation can make all the difference when decisions are made to remove them from their homes. Mikayla*, a child protection worker from regional Victoria, shares that at her workplace they use Buddy Bags to “provide much-needed comfort and support to children who have endured unimaginable challenges.”
“Child protection work is not for the faint of heart. We are on the frontlines of protecting children who are facing unimaginable hardships in their young lives.”
“When we receive a call for help, it's often due to urgent and crisis situations where the safety of a child is at immediate risk. It could be a case of domestic violence, substance abuse, neglect, or other forms of maltreatment within the family home” shares Mikayla. As much as her team strives to preserve families, the well-being of the child is their utmost priority, and in some cases, removal from the family home becomes necessary to ensure their safety.
In these chaotic moments, children are often brought to Mikayla and her team with little more than the clothes on their backs. She explains,
“That's where the Buddy Bags make a world of difference. We use the bags to support our children who often present without clean clothing and no belongings to ensure they can have clean clothes before entering foster care.”
Inside each Buddy Bag, are carefully selected items that children and young people need in those first moments when they can no longer stay at home and may have left in a hurry. Having their own brand-new pyjamas, underwear, socks and toothbrush may not seem much, but to a child in crisis, can restore a sense of dignity and normalcy during an otherwise tumultuous time. As Mikayla notes “They do provide children with essentials, but they love the teddy bear which provides comfort during the transport to the foster placement.”
“It is vital for us to ensure they have some belongings they can call their own during these transitions, as it helps to stabilize their emotional state and promotes a sense of belonging.”
“A recent case stands out in my mind involving a child who came into our care during a distressing situation that left them feeling scared and alone,” shares foster care worker, Rob. “Her name was Stephanie* and she came to us late one evening, having been removed from her family home due to severe neglect.”
“When Stephanie arrived, she clung tightly to her caseworker, tears were streaming down her face, and I could tell she was confused and scared. She had been living in really confronting conditions, surrounded by chaos and neglect. As we prepared to place her in a temporary foster care placement, I knew that providing her with a Buddy Bag could make a significant difference for her during this critical moment.”
“When I brought out the Buddy Bag, Stephanie couldn’t believe it was for her. She hesitantly unzipped it and peeked inside, revealing a brand-new set of pyjamas and a soft, huggable teddy bear. She kept checking that it was for her and wanted to know who had sent it- It was as if she slowly understood that she was not alone and that there were people who cared about her wellbeing.”
“The bag not only provided Stephanie with clean clothes and a cuddly companion but also conveyed the message that she deserved care and comfort despite the difficult circumstances she had endured.”
As Mikayla and Rob suggest, Buddy Bags are more than just material items; they embody the care, love, and concern of an entire community rallying around these children to offer them hope and a chance for a brighter future.
“To the Foundation, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for standing by us and providing these much-needed bags of comfort. Together, we are making a positive impact on the lives of these vulnerable children, ensuring that they know they are not alone.
"I simply cannot acknowledge your support enough in words alone.” - Mikayla.
